01 — Introduction
dreams Beckum GmbH
dreams Beckum GmbH is an information technology and software services company operating from Nordrhein‑Westfalen. The practice was formed around a simple observation: software that is expected to run for years benefits from being written by engineers who intend to be around for those years.
We are not a body‑shop and we are not an agency. We are a workshop of experienced engineers who take end‑to‑end responsibility for the systems we agree to build and operate.
Mission.
To build software systems that behave predictably in production, remain readable to future maintainers, and respect the people whose data flows through them.
Working principles.
Small teams. Written architecture before code. Continuous review. Deployment as a normal event, not an incident. Documentation as a deliverable, not an afterthought.
Approach to technology.
We follow the industry closely and adopt slowly. Any tool that enters our stack has to earn its place by making systems easier to operate, not by being new.
Approach to client collaboration.
We prefer long, honest relationships over promotional pitches. We describe risks in plain language, we say what we do not know, and we push back when a decision would harm the system.
Engineering philosophy.
Correctness first, then performance, then convenience. Code exists to be read; it runs as a side effect. Every architectural choice is written down, with its trade‑offs, in the repository it applies to.
Quality standards.
We treat testing, review and observability as ordinary parts of the craft, not as heroic activities. Systems ship with the instruments needed to understand their own behaviour.
Security and privacy principles.
Least privilege by default. Encryption in transit and at rest. Data minimisation as a design constraint. Regular internal review of access, retention and secrets.
Long‑term product thinking.
We are cautious about changes that trade a good long‑term shape for a small short‑term win. A system that is still comprehensible in year five is more valuable than one that was slightly faster to ship in year one.
Responsible use of technology.
We decline work that would use software to harm the people it touches. We are careful about surveillance, dark patterns and systems that manipulate rather than serve their users.
